ODU Field Hockey Takes on UConn in Regular Season Finale

The Old Dominion Field Hockey team (11-5) will host #10 UConn (14-3) in the final game of the regular season at the LR Hill Sports Complex. Both teams are 5-1 in the BIG EAST and the winner is the BIG EAST Regular Season Champion.

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion Field Hockey team (11-5) will host #10 UConn (14-3) in the final game of the regular season at the LR Hill Sports Complex. Both teams are 5-1 in the BIG EAST and the winner is the BIG EAST Regular Season Champion.

In the last meeting against UConn on October 27, 2023, ODU came back from a two goal deficit to find a winner in overtime from Rina Tsioles. Old Dominion conceded two goals in the first quarter but cut the lead before the end of the quarter at 2:45 with Frederique Zandbergen finding the net. Marlon De Bruijne brought the team’s level with 1:24 left in the fourth quarter. Tsioles scored an unassisted goal three minutes into overtime to complete the comeback 3-2.

ABOUT ODU:

Old Dominion is coming off a weekend where the team defeated Quinnipiac (2-1) and downed App State (2-1) on Senior Day. Amelie Zielcke was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for her displays in the two victories which included a goal against the Bobcats. Emily Tammaro was awarded to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her game winning goal in overtime to defeat Quinnipiac.

Tess Jedeloo leads the team in total points (27) on 12 goals and three assists. Frederique Zandbergen ranks second in total points (24) with four goals and a team leading 16 assists. Zandbergen is tied for first in the country in assists per game (1.00). Sian Emslie ranks third on the team with 23 total points from 10 goals and three assists.

Old Dominion ranks sixth in the nation in assists per game (3.00), ninth in goals scored per game (3.12), fourth in penalty corners per game (8.94), eighth in scoring margin (1.69), sixth in points per game (9.00), and 12th in scoring average (2.83). 

Old Dominion is first in the BIG EAST in fewest goals allowed (19), goals against average (1.33), goals allowed per game (1.19), goals off penalty corners (18), and total penalty corners (129). ODU ranks second in goals scored (47), goals scored per game (2.94), scoring margin (1.96), and scoring average (3.29).

Suus Broers has started all 16 games in goal, logging 919 minutes and recording 44 saves. She ranks second in the BIG EAST sporting a 1.44 goals against average.

ABOUT UCONN:

The Huskies are looking to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to Syracuse. Sophie Perschk and Juul Sauer are tied for the team’s leading scorer with 11 goals this season. Sol Simone leads the team in assists with 11. Perschk leads the team with 30 total points.

Natalie McKenna has started all 17 games in goal for the Huskies, logging 979 minutes in goal and recording 53 saves.

Old Dominion has clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament in Providence, Rhode Island and is set to begin play in the BIG EAST Conference Tournament on November 8. The Monarchs can be anywhere from the No. 1 seed to the No. 3 seed in the four-team tournament.
