Norfolk, Va. - The Old Dominion Field Hockey Team handled App State on Senior Day, defeating the Mountaineers 2-1. This brings ODU’s overall record to 11-5, 5-1 in BIG EAST conference play.
“We are so glad to honor our senior players with a win against a good team on Senior Day. It was a beautiful late October Sunday, and what a fantastic way to celebrate the college hockey careers of six great young athletes and women,” said ODU Head Coach Andrew Griffiths.
“Each one of them is a key part of our team, our culture and our success. As well as being competitors, they are each humble, hard-working and kind. We are grateful to each of them for all they have brought to ODU and our program,” Griffiths added.
Sian Emslie got the Monarchs on the board first at 11:00 in the first quarter after Emily Tammaro ran down the right side of the defense and found Emslie for the assist. Four minutes later App State was able to answer back after Jillian Orcutt scored for the Mountaineers to level the game 1-1. ODU quickly answered back with 4:12 remaining in the first quarter from a penalty corner that Tess Jedeloo slapped into the back of the net to take the lead 2-1. Frederique Zandbergen and Rina Tsioles were credited with assists on the goal. Old Dominion proceeded to control the next three quarters due to their defensive effort. With three minutes remaining, App State pulled their goalie Claire Grenis to create an attacking advantage but could not find the tying goal, ending the game 2-1.
“As far as the game goes, we created a lot of chances, and could have scored a couple of other goals, but App State played well and were dangerous in transition and open play, so we did well to limit their opportunities,” said Griffiths.
ODU generated 15 shots, 12 shots on goal, and seven penalty corners. Zandbergen’s assist in today’s game brought her career tally to 54, moving past Dana Sensenig as she now sits as the 10th all-time assist leader at Old Dominion University.
“But the important statistic is the final score, so we took care of business.” added Griffiths.
ODU’s defense held App State to five shots, three shots on target, and five penalty corners.
Suus Broers played the entire game in goal for the Monarchs, recording two saves.
Claire Grenis played 57 minutes in goal for the Mountaineers, recording 10 saves.
ODU will next be in action on Friday, November 1 for the final game of the regular season and BIG EAST conference play when they take on UConn in Norfolk at the LR Hill Sports Complex at noon.
