NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion Field Hockey team found a winner in overtime with a goal by Sanci Molkenboer, defeating James Madison 3-2 in the Townebank Royal Rivalry. The win brings ODU to 8-4, 3-1 in BIG EAST Conference play this season.
Both teams could not find a goal in the first half of play. The third quarter saw four goals scored by both teams. JMU found the net first by the way of Brynna Hill, Sian Emslie answered back for ODU to tie the score at one. Serena Langedoen found the back of the net through a penalty corner that was assisted by Frederique Zandbergen and Rina Tsioles to give ODU a 2-1 lead. JMU then tied the game up from an unassisted Carissa Tambroni goal. The game turned scoreless from there as the game headed to overtime. Old Dominion scored in overtime as Molkenboer found the net and the victory for the Monarchs.
ODU’s offense generated 16 penalty corners, 22 shots and 14 shots on goal. The Monarchs defense held JMU to seven shots, six penalty corners, and three shots on goal.
“The stats tell the story of the game, and we should have found a way to finish the game early. We had lots of corners and chances to convert on those, but we weren’t as sharp finishing in the circle today as we could have been.” said ODU Head Coach Andrew Griffiths
Suus Broers played the entire game in goal, securing the victory and recording one save. JMU’s Molly Schreiner played 39:27 in goal with Katie Fricke playing the remaining 26:79 in net for the Dukes. Schreiner recorded five saves while Fricke recorded six saves.
ODU will next be in action on Friday, October 18, when they take on Villanova in BIG EAST Conference play at the LR Hill Sports Complex in Norfolk, Va. at 3 p.m.
