The ODU field hockey team is looking to make it four straight away wins when they travel to Williamsburg for a clash with William & Mary at Busch Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. They have been strong in defense to record a shutout in all three matches. 

The last time these two teams faced off against each other was a year prior. On September 24, 2023 Old Dominion was able to secure a 4-0 victory. ODU finished with 11 shots, nine on goal. Goals by Nicolette Saccomandi and Sanci Molkenboer helped lead the way to victory.

ABOUT ODU: 

Old Dominion has won its first three games of the season by a combined total of 15 goals scored to zero allowed. They have held opposing teams to 11 shots total. In the previous time out, the team scored nine goals against Queens College of Charlotte with five different goalscorers.

Tess Jedeloo has started the season with five goals, including a hat trick in the team’s last game. Frederique Zandbergen has recorded a goal or an assist in all three of the Monarch’s wins to start the season. Serena Langendoen has found the back of the net as a defender in two out of three games. In the last game, both Avery Jackson and Jolene Ulichney scored two goals. With the goals being the first for Jackson at ODU. Sian Emslie has been a consistent contributor to the team's attack with two goals and two assists on the year. Rina Tsioles has started all three matches for ODU and has recorded three assists on the year so far.

Suus Broers has started all three games in goal for the Monarchs, registering three wins which were all shutouts. Elsa Goldsberry has come in and helped maintain that when called upon. 

ABOUT WILLIAM & MARY

The Tribe has been off to a rough start to begin the 2024 season, losing the first three fixtures on its schedule by conceding 18 goals to one goal scored. Head Coach Tess Ellis has been in charge of William & Mary since 2013.

Notably, Mimi Smith is the team’s new Assistant Coach, having joined this season. Smith is an ODU Field Hockey great, having been inducted in the ODU Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. While playing for the Monarchs she won the coveted 1999 Honda Award which recognizes the nation’s top field hockey player, being the second African American to ever win the award. She helped lead the team to the 1998 NCAA national title. She was also honored with being a First Team all-american in 1998 and a Third Team all-american in 1997. Smith ranks in ODU’s Top 10 for assists and earned a spot on the U.S. National Team during her time in Norfolk.

Pyper Friedman has started all three games for the Tribe, scoring one goal. In goal, the team has used all three goalkeepers on their roster, with Maddie George registering the most minutes on the team with 117:24. She has recorded 25 saves to 11 goals allowed for a .694 save percentage.
