NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s soccer team continues a five-match homestand on Friday, September 6 when they entertain the UMBC Retrievers for a 7 p.m. start.

The game will have live stats and be streamed on ESPN+.

In last year’s meeting at Baltimore, Nathan Alves scored his first collegiate goal off a corner kick at 77:22 for the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with the Retrievers in front of nearly 2,900 at Retriever Soccer Park. Michael Statham made six saves as the Monarchs had their second draw to start 2023.

ODU (2-2) hits the home pitch again after finishing off a rain-delayed 1-0 win over Radford on Monday afternoon. William Arnesen scored for the Monarchs with a well placed blast just over the outstretched goalie at 28:03 of the first half. Lewis Redding corralled a loose ball and found Timothy Ennin, who then connected with Arnesen for the tally.

UMBC (2-1-2) went 1-0-1 last weekend in the UMBC/Navy Tournament as they defeated Niagara (4-0) and dropped a 1-0 decision to Fairleigh Dickinson. Against Niagara, Ryan Calheira scored twice in the span of 25 seconds to jumpstart the hosts to the 4-0 win.

ABOUT ODU

The four goals in the win at George Washington were the most in a season opener since 2011 in a 6-0 win over Houston Baptist in a tournament at West Virginia.

Tennant McVea takes over as head coach of the Monarchs from long-time coach Alan Dawson who retired at the end of the 2023 season. He had served on the staff for seven years, including being on the Conference USA winning staff in 2014.

ODU leads the all-time series with UMBC 1-0-2 with the last two contests being draws, a scoreless one in 2012 and last year’s 1-1 match in Baltimore.

Through three matches, Timothy Ennin leads the Monarchs with two goals and two assists for six points. Key White has one goal and two assists for four points, with Eberle having a goal and an assist for three points. Noah Madrigal has tallied one goal and Lewis Redding has two assists to round out the scoring for ODU. Michael Statham has a .769 save percentage for the Monarchs in four starts in net.

ABOUT UMBC

The two quick goals for Calheira against Niagara gave him the team lead in scoring, five other Retrievers have one goal each. Hana Nesheim leads the team with three assists, while Alex Wroblewski is right behind with two. Emigdio Tormo Lopez has made 18 saves with an .818 save percentage through four starts.

UMBC was picked fourth in the America East preseason coaches poll with Jago Lott and Lasse Kelp named to preseason All-America East team.

Last season UMBC finished 7-4-5 overall and 3-1-3 in league play.
