HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – A Marco Marshall Silva goal with just over five minutes remaining enabled seventh-ranked Marshall to escape with a 2-1 win over Old Dominion in Sun Belt Conference Men’s Soccer on Sunday afternoon.
“I feel for the players today. We came on the road got the game plan right and should have gotten something from the game. We have to learn how to pick points up in these tight games. We will get home and get better again for next week. This group has all the ability to be a top team, we just need to have the mentality to match it. That is what we are working hard to change,” said ODU Head Coach Tennant McVea.
A scoreless first half that saw ODU (4-4-1, 0-2-0) hold a 5-1 advantage in shots, the hosts broke the scoreless draw first as Lineker Rodrigues Dos Santos was on the receiving end of feeds from Aymane Sordo and Pablo Simon and slid it in goal as Marshall trailed 1-0 at the 54:15 mark.
ODU battled back and drew even as Key White took a pass from Marcelo Randolf and raced down the right side of the field and eventually found the left side of the net as the Monarchs drew even at 1-1 at the 74-minute mark.
Silva got the game-winner on the receiving end of an Aleksandar Vukovic pass at 84:39 mark and gave Marshall (7-1-1, 2-0-0) a 2-1 lead.
ODU held a 12-7 advantage in shots on the night and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Each team had three shots on goal.
The Monarchs will be back at home on Saturday, October 5 with a 7 p.m. start against Georgia State.
