NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion Monarchs Field Hockey Team will look to continue its win streak on Friday, September 13, 5 p.m. against the Duke Blue Devils as they travel to Norfolk. In a clash of two of the top 25 ranked teams in the country, the Monarchs will be looking for their first win against the Blue Devils since 2013.

In the last meeting between these two programs on September 17, 2023, the squads battled for a breakthrough for two and a half quarters until a goal scored by Brynn Crouse of Duke was enough to see the Blue Devils secure the victory in North Carolina.

Before the game against Duke will begin there will be a ceremony to acknowledge the new field that was installed this summer.

The team will follow this matchup as Ohio State travels to Norfolk on Sunday, September 15, noon to take on ODU. Old Dominion leads the all-time series against Ohio State 5-1. The last time these two programs faced off against each other was in 2011. In that match, the Monarchs came out on top by a score of 2-0.

On Sunday the 15th we will celebrate the Maaike Hilbrand Legacy featuring a fundraising campaign and a 50 Years of ODU Field Hockey Alumni Celebration during this home opening weekend.

ABOUT ODU:

ODU has gotten off to a hot start to begin its season, outscoring opponents 19-1 on the way to a 4-0 start. Tess Jedeloo has scored seven goals on 22 shots, 15 on goal, a .682 shot on goal percentage. The team has secured 33 penalty corners in four matches and has averaged 19.8 shots per game. The second quarter has been a favorite of the Monarchs this season. They have scored seven goals on 28 shots, forcing 17 saves from opposing keepers and being awarded 12 penalty corners. 

Suus Broers has started all four games in goal and conceded just one goal from a penalty stroke against William & Mary. She has registered 180 minutes in goal and has recorded four saves on the season. 

During this week, two Monarchs received weekly honors from the BIG EAST Conference. With Jedeloo being named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and Langendoen named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Jedeloo was also honored by the NFHCA as she was recognized as the National Division I Offensive Player of the Week.

ABOUT DUKE:

The Blue Devils have gotten off to a strong start as they head into Norfolk, with a record of 3-1. Their only loss on the season so far came against #1 Northwestern in a narrow 1-0 defeat on Sept. 6.

Alaina McVeigh is the team’s leading scorer so far this season with seven points on three goals and one assist. Kira Curland and Josephine Palde are tied for second on the team with four points apiece. 

In goal, Duke has started the same keeper for each of their four matches. Frederique Wollaert has registered 180 minutes in goal, conceding two goals and making five saves.

ABOUT OHIO STATE:

The Buckeyes have not lost a game yet this season and they head into Norfolk, outsourcing teams in those games by a margin of 20-2. Ohio State will face off against Richmond on Friday before heading down to battle the Monarchs. 

The team’s leading goalscorer has been Makenna Webster, scoring five and registering four assists for a total of 14 points. Slightly behind her at the top of the team is Brenna Bough who has scored four goals and registered one assist for a total of nine points.

Abby Danson has started all four games in goal for the Buckeyes. Spending 231 minutes in goal, making 17 saves and conceding two goals so far this season.
