BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- A Filipe Matos header at 14:12 of the opening half proved to be the lone tally as homestanding Campbell defeated Old Dominion 1-0 in men’s soccer action Thursday night at Eakes Athletic Complex.
“Tonight is a really tough one to swallow. We have to regroup and rebound for Sunday. We have to work harder, and we have to learn lessons quickly. It will be nice coming home to play at ‘The Den’ and in front of our home crowd,” said ODU Head Coach Tennant McVea.
Campbell (3-0) opened the contest controlling the tempo and kept ODU (1-2) on its defensive side for most of the first 45 minutes. Luc Lavielle served the ball towards goal and Teva Lossic headed it toward Matos who headed it past an outstretched Michael Statham as the Camels took a 1-0 lead at the 14:12 mark.
In the second half, the Monarchs came out the aggressors and pushed the pace accomplishing five of their eight shots on goal in the final 45 minutes. The Monarchs had consecutive corner kicks with 13 minutes remaining. Key White had a big chance on the first one that ricocheted off the goalie and the cross bar, but ODU couldn’t convert.
On the night, Campbell held a 17-8 advantage in shots and 7-3 in shots on goal. Statham made six saves in the contest for ODU as each team had five penalty corner chances.
ODU now hits the home pitch for the first time in 2024 on Sunday, Sept. 1 when they entertain Radford at 4 p.m.
