Field Hockey Opens 2024 Season At Richmond Friday

Old Dominion Field Hockey will begin a new journey starting Friday, August 30 when they travel to Richmond to face off against the Spiders in a series that they have historically dominated.

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion Field Hockey will begin a new journey starting Friday, August 30 when they travel to Richmond to face off against the Spiders in a series that they have historically dominated.

 

The game will have live stats and will be streamed to ESPN+

 

Last meeting between the two resulted in a 4-0 win for the Monarchs. Holding the Spiders to 0 shots all game, Old Dominion’s Sacha De Gier scored a goal right before the end of the first period and the team did not look back after.

 

ABOUT ODU: 

 

Coach Andrew Griffiths will begin his 12th season in charge of the Old Dominion Field Hockey team. He will look to repeat last year’s success when the Monarchs finished as the BIG EAST Tournament Champion

 

ODU is ranked #18 in the NFHCA coaches poll and includes three players who made the Preseason BIG-EAST All Conference Team (Suus Broers, Kerry McCormick, & Frederique Zandbergen). Suus Broers was additionally selected as the Preseason BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year.

 

Frederique Zandbergen & Sanci Molkenboer are ODU’s leading returning scorers. Last season Zandbergen finished with 3 goals and 17 assists, Molkenboer finished with 9 goals and two assists. ODU finished last season averaging 2.95 goals per game on 14.2 shots per game.

 

ABOUT Richmond:

 

Richmond finished last season with a record of 7-11. The Spiders have two of their top three contributors returning for this campaign. Stevie Drum (8 goals + 1 assist in 18 games played) and Jess McMeeking (4 goals + 6 assists in 18 games played).
