NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion first-year head men’s soccer coach Tennant McVea announced on Friday the 2024 schedule for his Monarchs. ODU will play a 16-game regular season slate and have eight games at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
"This extremely competitive schedule gives us the opportunity to test ourselves against high level opposition before we enter conference play where we will, once again, be competing against some of the best soccer teams in the country,” said McVea. “After three tough road games at the start of the season, the group will be extremely excited to come home and play in front of our fantastic home fans for a long stretch in September."
The 2024 exhibition slate consists of three matches in a seven-day span. ODU will host UNC Wilmington on August 10 with a 5 p.m. kickoff. Three days later, they will visit College Park, Maryland to tangle with Maryland at 7 p.m. The exhibition slate ends as they travel to Longwood on August 17.
ODU will open the 2024 regular season with three straight road contests visiting George Washington (Aug. 22/1p.m.), VCU (Aug. 26/7 p.m.) and Campbell (Aug. 29/7 p.m.).
The Monarchs will come home for a five-match homestand starting on September 1 when Radford comes to town for a 4 p.m. start. These teams met last season in Radford with ODU coming away with a 2-1 win.
Five days later UMBC will come to the ODU Soccer Stadium for a 7 p.m. kick on September 6, followed on September 10 by a “757 clash” with the Tribe of William & Mary also at 7 p.m. The non-conference slate ends on September 15 when ODU hosts George Mason at 6 p.m.
The Sun Belt Conference is one of the toughest in the country as they had the second most teams by conference in the 2023 NCAA Tournament with five bids. League play opens up with a pair of NCAA Tournament qualifiers as ODU hosts West Virginia on September 21 at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers advanced to the national semifinals in 2023 and went 17-3-4 on the year.
ODU will then visit the other West Virginia school in the Sun Belt as the Monarchs will tangle at Marshall on September 29 at 4 p.m. The Thundering Herd made the third round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
October has the Monarchs starting at home on October 5 facing Georgia State at 7 p.m. The next three dates will be on the road as ODU visits Kentucky (Oct. 11/7 p.m.), UCF (Oct. 18/7 p.m.) and Coastal Carolina (Oct. 23/7 p.m.). Kentucky and UCF made the NCAA Tournament last year as each advanced to the second round.
The month of October closes at home as ODU entertains South Carolina on October 27 at 6 p.m. before closing the road slate at Georgia Southern on November 1 at 7 p.m.
ODU will finish the regular season slate on November 5 hosting James Madison in a TowneBank Royal Rivalry matchup at 7 p.m. The Dukes also made the NCAA Tournament advancing to the third round.
The league tournament will be on November 10 (quarterfinals), November 13 (semifinals) and November 17 (finals).
