STILLWATER, Okla. – Old Dominion women’s tennis junior Sofia Johnson saw her run at the 2024 NCAA Singles Championships come to an end in the Round of 16 as she fell 6-3, 7-5 to 70th-ranked Anastasiia Lopata of Georgia on Wednesday.
By making it to the Round of 16, Johnson locked up an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American honor becoming the third Monarch since 2000 to earn the award joining Nataly Cahana (2001, 2002) and Yuliia Starodubtseva (2022).
Johnson also became the first Sun Belt Conference player since 2014 to earn All-American honors.
“Great tournament for Sofia. We are gutted not to make the next round but are grateful for the performance required to make it this far. Great feelings and great lessons. I can’t wait for next season. Go Monarchs!,” said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.
Johnson was named First Team All-Sun Belt Conference in singles, First Team in doubles with Lidiia Rasskouskaia and named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year.
She finished the year 21-11 in singles going 7-2 in league play all at No. 1 in the lineup. Johnson debuted in national rankings at #122 on April 9, moving up to #118 on April 16 and currently at #116. She had a nine-match winning streak from Feb. 10 to April 7, which included wins over Ole Miss, Florida State, Iowa State (2), Kansas and VCU among others.
In doubles, she was 14-6 with Rasskouskaia having wins over Florida State, Penn State, Iowa State, VCU and Princeton.
