NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women's basketball team is WNIT bound and drew an opening round bye. ODU will face the winner of UNC Greensboro and North Carolina A&T in the second round which runs from March 23-26.
The location and time of that game will be determined after the first round is complete. Teams that received a first round bye are not guaranteed to host the second round.
ODU (22-9, 12-6 Sun Belt) posted their third straight 20-win season and are making their second WNIT appearance in the past three seasons. In the 2022 tournament, Head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones improved her WNIT record to 3-2 as her squad beat Towson (72-66) in the opening round before falling to Columbia (62-59).
At the end of the regular season, senior Kaye Clark was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference with 87 steals and 3.0 steals per game and later added All-Tournament Team honors. Additionally, senior En'Dya Buford was named to the All-Sun Belt Third Team finishing the season as the team's leading scorer with 12.4 points per game while also being second in the league behind Clark with 69 steals.
The Monarchs, ranked 124th in the NET, reached the Sun Belt Championship Semifinals, beating No. 5 seed ULM (67-64) before falling to eventual Sun Belt champion and top seed Marshall (76-70), who earned a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Thundering Herd open the NCAA Tournament against No. 4 seed Virginia Tech.
Including Marshall, ODU has played against four teams in the NCAA Tournament, beating both No. 12 seed Florida Gulf Coast and No. 15 Kent State. The Monarchs also hosted No. 3 seed NC State when the Wolfpack was ranked third in the AP Poll and fourth in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
In addition to the Monarchs, three other Sun Belt programs received a bid to the WNIT: ULM, Southern Miss and Troy.
