NORFOLK, Va. – Rutgers scored seven runs in the first three innings and won the first game of this weekend's series 10-3 over Old Dominion University Baseball on a gloomy Friday night in Norfolk.

Rutgers (4-0) scored a pair of runs in the opening frame on a run-scoring ground out and an error to take a 2-0 lead. The Scarlet Knights stretched their lead to 5-0 in the second on an RJ Johnson sac fly, and RBI singles from Trevor Cohen and Josh Kuroda-Grauer.

Rutgers made it 7-0 in the third with another run scoring on an error and a second RBI single by Cohen.

Old Dominion (3-2) got on the board in the third inning. Steven Meier walked and after an Evan Holman strikeout, Kyle Edwards delivered his first home run of the year to make it a 7-2 game.

The Scarlet Knights though, tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh. ODU cut into the lead with one run in the bottom of the seventh with Meier scoring Alex Bouche with an RBI single.

John Holobetz suffered the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs, four earned, in three innings. Steven Trone and Kyle Finn had scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Monarchs.
