Lacrosse Downs VCU For First Win Of The Year

NORFOLK, Va. – Olivia Tannebeger scored the decisive goal with 1:30 left in the game as ODU defeated VCU, 8-7 on Wednesday at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. Lilly Siskind led the way for the Monarchs scoring three goals and assisting two more. 

The Rams opened the scoring with a goal four minutes into the game but Siskind linked up with Sydney Taylor to tie the game with five minutes left in the first. ODU's lead was lost two minutes later as VCU then scored two minutes later and took a 2-1 lead into the second. 

Old Dominion started quickly in the second period of play as Siskind scored two goals in the first four minutes. VCU answered with a goal of their own tying the game at three, but Siskind completed her hat trick at the 5:19 mark to give ODU a 4-3 lead at the break. 

VCU tied the game to open the third quarter before Emma Arnold notched back-to-back goals giving the Monarchs a 6-4 advantage with four minutes remaining in the third period of play. The Rams opened the final quarter with a goal to cut into the Monarch lead but Megan Hopfensperger responded with her second goal of the year to put the Monarchs back up by two. VCU would take advantage playing with a man-up and score two goals to tie the game with seven minutes to go. The game winner was set up by

Taylor who found a cutting Tanneberger who ripped a shot into the top left corner. ODU would run out the remaining amount of time to hold on for its first win on the 2024 season. 

Jenna Peccia made seven saves on the day while also causing three turnovers and scooping up eight groundballs. 

Old Dominion is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 28 when they travel to take on Longwood in Farmville at 2 p.m.
