NORFOLK, Va. – The 20th-ranked Old Dominion University women's tennis team returns to Sun Belt Conference action on Friday afternoon facing 75th-ranked Marshall in Huntington, W. Va. at 2 p.m.
"Our in-conference rivalry with Marshall in C-USA and now Sun Belt has become a rooted part of our program. Marshall is amongst the top teams in the conference right now, with experienced players and a strong coaching staff. We are ready for a battle," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.
ODU (7-4, 2-0) enters the match coming off a two-match sweep last weekend. They opened Sun Belt Conference play defeating Louisiana (4-0) and Texas State (4-3) on the road. Shahar Biran leads the team in singles wins this spring with seven, while Sofia Johnson, Alesya Yakubovich, Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Alexandra Viktorovitch have five apiece. In doubles, Sasnouskaya and Johnson are ranked 29th nationally and are 5-2 on the spring at the top spot. Biran and Yakubovich are 5-4 and have won their last four matches in a row.
Marshall (8-4, 2-0) is coming off a 6-1 win over Radford on Wednesday. They defeated ULM (6-1) and Arkansas State (7-0) in its opening conference weekend. Johanna Strom is 11-0 this spring in singles mainly at line two, while Doroteja Joksovic is 8-3 primarily at line three. In doubles, Strom and Emma Vanderheyden are 9-2 at the top spot to lead the team.
The Monarchs will return to action next weekend to start a five-match homestand facing South Alabama on March 25 and Southern Miss on March 26.
