NORFOLK, Va. – The 2023 BIG EAST Champions Old Dominion Monarchs get set to tangle with #4 Maryland in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Nov. 10 at noon. ODU rides a 12-game winning streak into the contest and it will be the program's first NCAA tournament game since 2013 when head coach Andrew Griffiths led the team to a regular season BIG EAST Championship and earn an at-large bid to the tournament.
The Monarchs (14-5) defeated #7 Liberty in the BIG EAST Championship last Sunday at Temple, 3-1 to clinch an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Nicole Fredricks was named Tournament MVP and joined Marlon de Bruijne, Frederique Zandbergen and Sacha de Gier on the All-Tournament team.
The Dutch duo of de Bruijne and de Gier lead the Monarchs offensively with de Bruijne leading in points (42) and goals (16) while de Gier has 30 points and 12 goals. Zandbergen leads the team with 17 assists, which is third best in all of the country. Suus Broers continues to be a staple in the Monarchs' defense as she has made 50 saves and has a goals against average of 1.10 while having six shutouts and adding another three combined shutouts.
Maryland fell to #2 Northwestern in the BIG 10 Championship game 1-0 in double overtime. Hope Rose leads the Terrapins (16-5) with 28 points and 13 goals while Margot Lawn leads the team with 10 assists and is second in points with 26. Old Dominion and Maryland last met in 2016 in College Park when the Terrapins downed ODU, 2-1. Maryland leads the all-time series 32-26-1.
With a win the Monarchs will advance to the Elite 8 to face the winner of Virginia and Saint Joseph's.
