NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women's basketball team opens its season this Monday when the Monarchs take on Lincoln (Pa.) in a 4 p.m. EST game at Chartway Arena.

ODU's season-opener will be streamed on ESPN+ and fans can also hear the game on Priority Auto Sports Radio 94.1 or follow along with live stats.

The Series
Monday's game marks just the second meeting between the two programs after ODU hosted Lincoln for its Education Day game on Dec. 6 last season. In front of a crowd of 6,000 screaming elementary school students, the Monarchs rolled to an 81-64 victory over the Lions.

About ODU
The Monarchs defeated Christopher Newport University 65-48 in an exhibition game on Oct. 27. Simone Cunningham led the way with a 17-rebound, 12-point double-double and fellow newcomer En'Dya Buford finished with 14 points. Nnenna Orji and Jordan McLaughlin followed with seven points each, and McLaughlin added four steals to her totals.

ODU is coming off a 2022-23 campaign that saw the team reach the Sun Belt Championship semifinals and finish 22-12 overall. The Monarchs also owned the league's best record at home, going 13-2 when playing at Chartway Arena. ODU will be without All-Sun Belt Second Team and All-Tournament Team selection Amari Young, who finished her career due to graduation. The Monarchs return five players from last season, including starters Kaye Clark and McLaughlin, and have 10 newcomers.

The Monarchs were picked to finish fourth in the conference preseason coaches' poll. Head Coach DeLisha Milton-Jones enters her fourth season leading the team and is looking for her third-straight season with 20-plus wins.

"This year we have our sights set [on winning the league], I think the same as any other team in the Sun Belt Conference," Milton-Jones said at the conference's Media Day last month in New Orleans. "You want to win, and you want to put a great product out there on the floor. We went out this year to recruit players that we felt could get us to that mark. It's one thing to make the semifinals of the conference tournament, but we want to cross the line. We want to get to the finals, we want to be able to call ourselves champions and to go dancing at the end of the season."

About Lincoln (Pa.)
The Lions captured a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) North Division title last season and finished 19-9 overall with a 12-4 mark in conference play. Their bid to repeat as CIAA Champions was spoiled though as Lincoln fell 59-45 to sixth-seeded Shaw University in the second round of the conference tournament.

Lincoln was picked to finish second in its league in this year's preseason poll. Anyssa Fields, a guard/forward from Long Beach, New Jersey, was voted to the Preseason Front Court Team after finishing second in the league in field goal shooting percentage (.423) and seventh in scoring with 14.3 points per game. She also led the Lions on the glass with 5.1 rebounds per game and was second on the team in both blocks (8) and steals per game (1.7). Other key returners for the Lions include guards Jaleesa Lanier (8.6 ppg) and Ciani Montgomery (8.9 ppg) and forwards D'Ayzha Atkinson (7.3 ppg) and Maya Madison Walker (5.0 rpg).

Head coach Janice Washington enters her third season with the program and has compiled a 41-17 record in her time with the Lions.

Up Next
ODU has its first game in this year's MAC-Sun Belt Challenge on Saturday when the Monarchs host Buffalo for a 4 p.m. game at Chartway Arena. ODU will play at a Mid-American Conference school on Feb. 10, with its opponent to be determined by NET rankings in January.
