NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion women's basketball returns from the Thanksgiving break and caps off its five-game homestand this Tuesday as the Monarchs host Elon for a 6:30 p.m. game at Chartway Arena.
Tuesday's contest will be streamed on ESPN+ with Chip Tarkenton and Kim Aston calling the action. Fans can also hear Matthew Hatfield and Shonda Deberry on Priority Auto Sports Radio 94.1 FM or follow along with live stats.
Also, in support of ODU's HACE Toy Drive, fans who bring an unopened toy to donate will receive free admission.
The Series
ODU and Elon met on the hardwood for the first time last season, with the Phoenix claiming a 71-68 decision on Nov. 22 at the Schar Center in Elon, North Carolina. ODU led 41-31 at the break and used a 12-0 run to take a 51-47 lead in the third quarter, but the hosts pulled even at 66-66 and again at 68-68 in the fourth. Elon then converted 3-of-4 shots at the free-throw line to close out the game.
Jordan McLaughlin led the Monarchs in the loss with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. Amari Young just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Kaye Clark and Althea Kara Angeles followed with nine points each.
About ODU
The Monarchs are 4-0 to start a season for the first time since 2012-13. A win on Tuesday would mark the program's first 5-0 start since the 1998-99 season. ODU is coming off a 57-38 win over Texas Southern on Nov. 17 in what was Education Day at Chartway Arena.
ODU currently leads the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 44.8 points per game. The team also ranks fourth in the country in field goal percentage defense (.306), 13th in rebounds per game (46.75), 14th in offensive rebounds per game (17.2) and 22nd in rebounding margin (+12.0). As a team, the Monarchs are shooting .340 from the field, .250 from beyond the arc and .639 at the free-throw line.
En'Dya Buford is the team's top scorer at 10.8 ppg, Clark is next at 9.3 ppg and Mimi McCollister is averaging 7.3 points. Buford and McCollister have made six three-pointers each, Buford is shooting 9-for-12 (.750) at the line and Simone Cunningham is 9-for-14 (.643). Cunningham owns a team-high 32 boards (8.0 rpg), McLaughlin has dished out 10 assists, and Clark ranks 11th nationally with 3.75 steals per game.
About Elon
The Phoenix (2-4) played in Georgia State's Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 22-23, falling 66-59 to Bradley last Wednesday before bouncing back with a 75-68 win over the host Panthers on Thursday. Freshman guard Maraja Pass was named the Coastal Athletic Association's (CAA) Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. The Shelby, North Carolina native scored eight points with four rebounds, seven assists and no turnovers in 26 minutes off the bench versus Bradley. She contributed eight points, five boards, four assists and one steal in the win over GSU.
Elon leads its conference with 28.3 bench points per contest, but its opponents have outscored the Phoenix by an average of 15.7 points as they allow 71.5 ppg. The team is also getting beat on the glass with a -7.5 rebounding margin and is committing 3.5 more turnovers per contest. Elon comes into Tuesday's game shooting .382 from the floor, including .263 from the perimeter, and .676 at the charity stripe.
Iycez Adams and Pass are both scoring 8.0 ppg to pace the offense, and Ajia James is closed behind the pair at 7.5 ppg. James is the threat from long range, shooting .379 from distance with a team-best 11 threes made, and Pass has earned the most trips to the line and is shooting .706 (12-for-17). Adams has pulled down 28 boards (5.6 rpg) and is also first on the team with six blocks, while Pass and Vanessa Taylor have tallied nine and seven steals, respectively.
Elon was picked to finish 11th in the CAA's Preseason Poll and sophomore guard Raven Preston was named to the Preseason All-CAA First Team.
