NORFOLK, Va. – It's an early start for Old Dominion women's basketball on Friday as the Monarchs host Texas Southern for this year's Education Day Game, scheduled for an 11 a.m. opening tip at Chartway Arena. ODU will welcome 3,200 fourth graders from 30 Norfolk Public schools to come watch the action.

The Series
ODU and Texas Southern met for the first time last season, with the Monarchs securing a 75-49 victory at the Health & Physical Education Arena in Houston on Nov. 10, 2022. Kaye Clark led the offense with 18 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor, 2-for-4 from distance and a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line. The Milwaukee, Wisc. native also grabbed nine a career high nine steals with four rebounds, two assists and a block. Jordan McLaughlin was the other Monarch in double figures with 12 points.
About ODU
The Monarchs (3-0) defended their home court on Tuesday night as ODU defeated Xavier, 55-43. En'Dya Buford scored a team-high 12 points and shot 3-for-3 at the line while Mikayla Brown finished with 11 points and seven rebounds with a 3-for-4 effort at the line. Nnenna Orji ended up with eight points and six boards and Simone Cunningham tallied six points with a team-best nine boards.
Buford enters Friday's game as the team's leading scorer at 11.0 points per game, followed closely by Clark at 10.0 ppg. Buford and Mimi McCollister (7.0 ppg) have combined to make nine threes and McLaughlin has dished out nine assists. Clark currently ranks sixth in the country in both steals (14) and steals per game (4.67) and Cunningham has recorded three blocks.
As a team, the Monarchs rank 20th nationally in scoring defense (47.0 ppg), 24th in offensive rebounds per game (18.3) and 34th in rebounds per game (47.00).
About Texas Southern
The Tigers come into Friday's matchup sporting a 1-1 record following a 76-59 loss at New Mexico on Nov. 6 and a 109-67 win over NAIA-member North American this past Tuesday. Three players finished in double figures: Daeja Holmes led the way with 26 points and eight rebounds, Shomari Phillips followed with a 17-point performance, and Jordyn Turner chipped in 12 points.
Holmes owns the team highs in both points per game (20.5) and rebounds per game (6.5). Turner is next in scoring with a 13.5 average, and Taniya Lawson and Phillips are both at 10.0 ppg. Holmes and Phillips have both made five three-pointers while Turner has converted 7-of-9 shots at the charity stripe. On defense, Phillips has four steals while Maci Quiller, Anela Thomas, Alisa Knight and Jaida Belton have made two blocks each.
TSU currently ranks sixth in the country with 41.0 bench points per game. The team is also first in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.15), defensive rebounds per game (30.5), and three-pointers per game (8.5). The Tigers were picked to finish 11th in the SWAC Preseason Poll and head coach Vernette Skeete is in her second season leading the program.
