The Series
ODU and Xavier met for the first time last season in Cincinnati, with the Musketeers winning by a final of 65-49 at the Cintas Center. Amari Young led the Monarchs in the loss with seven points, five rebounds, one assist and one block. ODU trailed 36-25 at halftime and was held to nine points in both the second and third quarters.
About ODU
After defeating Lincoln (Pa.) 72-50 in their season opener last Monday, the Monarchs (2-0) picked up another win on Saturday with a 59-48 victory over Buffalo in the first round of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. After trailing by as many as 15 points midway through the third quarter, the Bulls were able to fight back to within 45-42 with 5:39 left in the fourth. ODU's defense then caused five Buffalo turnovers and the Monarchs converted 10-of-12 shots at the free-throw line to secure the win.
Kaye Clark leads the team with 12.0 points per game, though En'Dya Buford isn't far behind with 10.5 ppg and Mimi McCollister sits at 8.0 ppg. The trio have combined to make nine of ODU's 12 three-pointers so far as the Monarchs are shooting .293 from the perimeter. Simone Cunningham owns the team high in rebounds with 9.0 per game, good for fifth in the Sun Belt, and Mikayla Brown follows her with 7.0 rpg.
Through games played on Nov. 12, Clark ranks seventh nationally in steals (11) and eighth in steals per game (5.50).
ODU's rebounding and defensive pressure have proven to be key parts of its game this year. The Monarchs currently rank ninth in the country with 20.5 offensive rebounds per outing, which has led to 33 second-chance points through the first two games. The team has also scored 35 points off of 42 turnovers by their opponents.
About Xavier
The Musketeers (0-2) started off their 2023-24 campaign at Youngstown State on Nov. 8, falling 55-41 to the Penguins as graduate forward Nila Blackford just missed out on a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Xavier then hosted James Madison on Saturday, suffering an 81-54 setback to the Dukes. Junior guard Kaysia Woods set new career highs with 17 points and five three-pointers made, adding a team-high four assists and three rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was senior guard Mackayla Scarlett, who finished with 15 points.
Woods and Blackford lead Xavier with 11.5 and 10.5 points per game, respectively, while Scarlett is just shy of averaging double figures at 9.5 ppg. Blackford is the go-to on the glass with 8.0 rpg, and senior guard Tae'lor Purvis has grabbed six steals. She leads the Big East Conference and ranks third in the country with 39.25 minutes per game.
Billi Chambers was named Xavier's ninth head coach on April 5 and takes over the program after spending 10 seasons at Iona (2013-23). The two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year led the Gaels to two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2015-16 and 2022-23. Iona won a pair of MAAC regular season titles in 2013-14 and 2022-23 and two MAAC Tournament championships in 2015-16 and 2022-23.
Xavier was picked to finish 11th in the Big East's Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Musketeers have seven returners and seven newcomers for this season.
