NORFOLK, Va. – A penalty kick by Karan Mandair in the first half and stellar defense helped lead the Old Dominion men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Campbell on Tuesday night at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
The win helped ODU close out a four-match homestand 3-0-1 and put their overall record to 5-0-5 on the season.
Following an ODU throw-in at 10:43, Jonas Schmalbach was taken down inside the penalty box by Stevem Johnson-Fikula resorting in a penalty kick. Karan Mandair buried the opportunity in the lower left corner to put the Monarchs up 1-0. On the season, Mandair now has a team-high four goals which have all been via penalty kicks which equals the most nationally.
For most of the first half, Campbell was in command of possession time but couldn't find a crack in the ODU defense. During the second half, ODU regained command of possession time and outshot Campbell 6-3. On the night, ODU held a slight 8-7 advantage in shots. Campbell held a slight 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Michael Statham finished his fourth clean sheet of the season making three saves.
"Really important one tonight as the midweek contests are always difficult," said ODU Assistant Coach Nathan Jones. "It was our last non-conference game of the season and getting a home win along with another clean sheet to finish the homestand unbeaten is huge. We are looking forward to a big test on Saturday at South Carolina."
ODU now hits the road to take on South Carolina on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in a Sun Belt Conference matchup.
