NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women's soccer team closed out their home slate on Sunday afternoon with a 0-0 draw against Georgia State at the ODU Soccer Complex.
With the draw, ODU (10-2-4, 5-2-2) clinches the East Division and the second seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Foley, Alabama from Oct. 30 – Nov. 5. The Monarchs will play on November 1 against an opponent to be determined.
"First of all, I'm so proud of this group in finishing the top seed of the East Division. This is a great accomplishment given the strength of our conference," said ODU Head Coach Angie Hind. "We were really resilient against a really good Georgia State team today. They caused us problems in the first half, but I was so pleased how we responded second half and had much more of the play, limiting them for long spells and putting much more pressure on their goal."
Junior goalkeeper Emily Bredek had six saves on the day and set a new school record with her 10th shutout of the season. She broke the previous mark of nine set by Kasey Perry in 2021 and Lauren Tupman in 2008. The clean sheet was the 11th of the year for ODU and is one off the school record set in 2008 of 12.
Georgia State (8-3-6, 4-2-3) controlled possession early in the contest forcing Bredek to make four first-half saves. Each team had shots bounce off the posts in the opening 45 minutes as Georgia State held a 6-5 advantage in shots during that first half.
In the second, the Panthers had the first crack as Aaliyah Faddoul had a breakaway opportunity that was swatted away by a diving Bredek save early in the second half. From there, ODU forced the tempo and had a couple corner kicks in the final 90 seconds but couldn't put one in the net.
"Whilst we couldn't find the net, it's another shut out and again shows how tough we can be when it's needed," Hind said. "The point takes us to the top of our division and guarantees #2 seed in the tournament with a game remaining and I think that's a great place to be."
ODU will close the regular season on Thursday night in Monroe, Louisiana against ULM at 8 p.m.
