NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's soccer team heads to James Madison on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. Sun Belt Conference matchup..
 
ODU dropped its first home match of the season on Saturday night falling 2-1 to second-ranked UCF. Jonas Schmalbach tied the match at the 69:07 mark for his fourth goal of the season.
 
JMU has played three straight ties with South Carolina (1-1), then third-ranked West Virginia (2-2) and Kentucky (0-0) last Friday night.
 
This marks the second year of the TowneBank Royal Rivalry series between ODU and JMU, which amplifies school pride between the two universities and rekindles a decade old rivalry steeped in tradition across all shared sports programs. 
 
TowneBank is a longstanding supporter of college athletics, and they are excited to cheer along the healthy competition between Old Dominion University and James Madison University. TowneBank is fortunate to have a strong alumni base on both sides of the rivalry and looks forward to seeing who will hoist the crown for the 2023-2024 academic year. 
 
The series is in favor of the Dukes who lead 20-13-8. Last year in Norfolk, the teams played to a scoreless draw.
 
ABOUT ODU
With his goal against UCF, Schmalbach tied Karan Mandair for the goals scored lead (4) and took over the points lead (9). Mandair is tied with William Arnesen in points (8), while Arnesen has three goals and two assists. Nathan Lam leads the team in assists with three.
 
In the net, Michael Statham has a 1.00 goals against average, a .793 save percentage and has had four shutouts this season.
 
With another tie, the Monarchs will match the Sun Belt Conference single season record for most ties with six. Three teams share that mark, including the 1990 Old Dominion Monarchs who finished 8-6-6.
 
Mandair has matched Ryan Condotta for most penalty kicks made in a season with his fourth against Campbell. Condotta was also 4-for-4 in 2015 and both have made all five career attempts.
 
ABOUT JMU
Clay Obara leads JMU in scoring with five goals and one assist for 11 points, with Kevin Larsson next at four goals and one assist for nine points. Rodrigo Robles and Evan Southern are next with eight points as Robles has three goals and two assist, while Southern has two goals and a team high four assists.
 
In the net, Sebastien Conlon leads the team with a 1.28 goals against average, a .717 save percentage and has had two shutouts.
