NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion Field Hockey team improved to 9-5 on the season after defeating the Richmond Spiders, 4-0 on Sunday at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. Sacha de Gier scored two goals for the Monarchs in the win. ODU extended its win streak to seven wins.
The Monarchs got on the board in the first quarter with under two minutes to play as de Gier fired a shot into the back of the goal. ODU outshot the Spiders 6-0 in the quarter but only came away with one goal.
With nine minutes to play in the second quarter, Old Dominion was granted a penalty corner. Frederique Zandbergen would send a ball into Danielle Husar, who stopped the ball for Nicole Fredricks and she sent a shot past the keeper. The Monarchs made it 3-0 with 45 seconds to play in the first half when Zandbergen sent a ball in from the outside that deflected off of de Gier's stick for the goal.
ODU put the finishing touches on the game three minutes into the fourth quarter when Marlon de Bruijne finished her penalty stroke. Old Dominion didn't allow a shot or corner and finished the day with 14 shots and eight corners.
"It was a great team effort, we are happy with the team. We came out strong after a tough game Friday and we knew we had another tough one today and we came out and played really well together as a team," said assistant coach Peter Taylor.
"We want to continue to grow and improve the points that we need to and the points that we are doing well we want to continue to improve there as well. We have gradually done that all year and the team has worked really hard and we are happy as a coaching staff and as team it is a really tight unit and we are progressing well."
"We want to keep our foot on the gas and keep improving," said Taylor.
Old Dominion is back in action on Friday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. against Quinnipiac at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex for Senior Day.
