Matushkina Advances To Quarterfinals In ITF Hilton Head Island Event

NORFOLK, Va. – A pair of Old Dominion women's tennis standouts competed this week in the International Tennis Federation DVM Shipyard Cup hosted by the Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina and fared very well.
 
Freshman Kira Matushkina advanced into the main draw and into the quarterfinals. In qualifying, she defeated Madison Hill 6-0, 6-1 and then knocked off Kelly Keller 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 to make the main draw. Keller played line one for Arkansas last year and was currently ranked 48th in the NCAA.
 
In the main draw, she defeated Gayathri Krishnan 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and then defeated sixth-seeded Angella Okutoyi 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 before falling to eventual champion Sophia Biolay 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
 
Junior Sofia Johnson went 1-1 in the qualifying draw with a win over Brooke Lynn Schaefer 6-4, 6-2, then fell by the same score to Alexia Harmon.
 
"Kira really stepped up and showed off her talent and the type of player she is capable of beating," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla. "I'm excited for Monarch Nation and the women's program moving forward."
 
ITA ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Old Dominion women's tennis standouts Sofia Johnson and Alexandra Viktorovitch were selected to participate in the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C.
 
Johnson and Viktorovitch will compete in the qualifying rounds for doubles starting on Monday, while Johnson is in the pre-qualifying rounds in singles.
 
Spots are earned in this event based off of last year's results as well as preseason rankings.
