COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Old Dominion Men's soccer team took its first loss of the season on Saturday night, falling 1-0 to South Carolina at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium.
The Gamecocks scored with five seconds remaining in the match after an Old Dominion foul which gave Ethan Dekal Deks a free kick opportunity who would find the top right corner.
The first half was dominated by South Carolina (4-5-2, 2-1-1) as they would outshoot the Monarchs 10-2. Michael Statham made six saves and kept the Gamecocks off the board.
Entering the second half still tied ODU (5-1-5, 2-1-1) would flip the script and outshoot South Carolina 10-6. The Monarchs had a chance with five minutes remaining in the match as Pierce Gallaway had a shot hit the crossbar which was then cleared by the Gamecocks.
Statham made a season high seven saves and the Monarchs also set a season high in corner kicks with 12.
Old Dominion is back in action Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. when they host #3 Central Florida at the ODU Soccer Complex.
