DURHAM, NC – The Old Dominion Field Hockey team fell to #9 Duke on Sunday in Durham, 1-0.

The first quarter was controlled by ODU (2-5) as they outshot Duke 3-1. Duke (6-1) held the Monarchs scoreless and went into the second quarter tied at zero. The second quarter was a defensive battle. Duke outshot ODU 2-0 in the quarter but neither of the shots were on goal and the score remained tied at the half.

The defensive battle continued into the third quarter until Duke was granted a corner and Brynn Crouse took a deflected shot and slotted it past Suus Broers. Old Dominion entered the fourth quarter trailing 1-0 and with five minutes left in the game the Monarchs pulled the keeper to try and generate some offense but were unable to find the back of the net.

"Really tough loss. We outplayed Duke today, I think there is little question about that if you watched the game. But it doesn't matter if you don't put it on the scoreboard. We have to score on our corner opportunities. Corners are the difference in the score line in the last two games. But we have to find a way to score period," said head coach Andrew Griffiths.

"Regardless, I am so pleased with the effort level of our players and our coaches and the way we played. We stayed together and showed a lot of heart. They are a really strong team coming off a 4-0 win over Syracuse. And we created plenty of chances against them and moved the ball really well. We had strong performances all over the field, and we just need to find a way to break though."

Old Dominion is back in action next Friday and Sunday as they play host to Temple and William & Mary at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
