NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion Field Hockey is back on the road to take on two Top 10 foes this weekend. ODU begins its road trip on Friday, Sept. 15 when the Monarchs begin BIG EAST play at #10 Liberty at 3 p.m. and will turn around and go play #9 Duke on Sunday, Sept. 17 starting at 1 p.m.
Friday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ and Sunday's will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
ODU is coming off a 1-1 weekend with an 8-0 win over Queens on Friday in a game where five different Monarchs scored, and Marlon de Bruijne scored a hat trick in the first half. The Monarchs would fall to #2 North Carolina on Sunday, 2-1. The lone Old Dominion goal came after de Bruijne hit a shot in the box that deflected off Frederique Zandbergen's stick. Suus Broers was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second time this season and de Bruijne was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the first time this season. Leading ODU offensively is de Bruijne with 11 points, five goals and one assist. Emily Tammaro, Danielle Husar, Sacha de Gier and Zandbergen are all tied with two assists. Broers has been the main goalie for the Monarchs this season and has made 19 saves while only allowing seven goals.
Liberty is coming off a 1-1 weekend with a win in overtime 2-1 against #14 Harvard on Friday and an overtime loss to #13 Duke 2-1 on Sunday. Leading the Flames offensively is Milagros Arteta with three goals and seven points, Jodie Connolly has seven points and leads the team with five assists. ODU and Liberty faced off two times last season, in the first matchup the Monarchs defeated the Flames 1-0 in a penalty shootout but Liberty would take down Old Dominion in the BIG EAST Championship 3-1. Liberty leads the all-time series 9-7.
Duke is coming off a 2-0 weekend with win over Longwood, 9-0 on Friday and a 2-1 overtime win over #9 Liberty on Sunday. Leading Duke offensively is Hannah Miller with a team high 14 points and five assists and is second on the team with five goals. Alaina McVeigh has 13 points and leads the team with six goals. The last time the Monarchs and Blue Devils met was in 2021 when Duke defeated ODU 5-1 in Durham. Duke has won the last eight meetings but Old Dominion leads the series 23-21.
