Old Dominion Field Hockey Dominates In 3-0 Victory Over Central Michigan On Friday

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Old Dominion Field Hockey team started its Michigan road trip weekend with a dominant victory over Central Michigan on Friday, 3-0. Marlon de Bruijne, Sacha De Gier and Jolene Ulichney each scored in the win. ODU not only shutout Central Michigan (1-2) in the goals department, but did not allow a single shot or corner to the Chippewas. The Monarchs tallied 29 shots and 17 corners in the win.
Old Dominion (1-1) started fast on Friday as de Bruijne opened the scoring one minute and 50 seconds into the game. ODU piled on 14 shots and had 10 corners but were unable to convert any of the other chances.
In the second quarter the Monarchs extended its lead making it 2-0 after Emily Tammaro sent a corner into Danielle Husar for De Gier to rip into the back of the goal. Old Dominion made it 3-0 with a minute and a half left before halftime after Ulichney took a deflected de Bruijne's shot and slotted it past the keeper.
In the second half the Monarchs added nine more shots but couldn't find the back of the net.
"It was good to get our first win of the season. The field is bouncy and tougher to control the ball, so one of the most positive things is that we didn't allow them into our defensive circle once, which is a strong defensive performance," said head coach Andrew Griffiths.
"We should have knocked in a bunch of goals given the amount of shots and scoring opportunities, but their goalie played outstanding, so I want to give her a lot of credit. We will have to work on our positioning inside the attacking circle and rebounding to get a few more on the board!"
"This is our first road trip of the season and yesterday was a long day of travel and practice. So tonight, will be plenty of recovery time, and really looking forward to a challenge on Sunday."
Old Dominion is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 3 when they take on #4 Michigan in Ann Arbor starting at noon.
