ATLANTA – Old Dominion University Football cornerback and kick returner LaMareon James was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, the Wuerffel Foundation announced.
The Wuerffel Trophy is College Football's Premier Award for Community Service. It is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida who parlayed his success on the football field into a lifetime of service. The Wuerffel Trophy embodies Danny's commitment to being a humanitarian, while honoring student-athletes who are inspired to serve others and make positive impacts on society.
James is a two-time all-conference honoree as a kick returner and returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns as a freshman in 2021. His first return came in a win against Louisiana Tech, and his second was against Tulsa in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. His return against Tulsa was the first ever opening kickoff for a touchdown in program history. Last season, James recorded his first career interception, which was the game-clincher in the win over Virginia Tech.
A Norfolk native, James has done a plethora of volunteer work, including reading to kids at local elementary schools, working camps and feeding the homeless.
James and the Monarchs open the 2023 campaign at Virginia Tech on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 8 p.m. on the ACC Network.
