BALTIMORE, Md. – Jonas Schmalbach headed in the only corner kick on the night for the Monarchs off a feed from Nathan Lam in the 78th minute as Old Dominion and UMBC played to a 1-1 draw in men's soccer action Monday night.
"We showed great resilience in the second half to claw our way back into the game after a tentative first half performance," said ODU Head Coach Alan Dawson. "We will need to put 90 minutes in the rest of the way. All in all, this was a good result against a very good UMBC team on the road."
ODU (0-0-2) made the most of its first corner kick of the night as Lam served it to the far post and Schmalbach got enough to put it into the back of the net for the equalizer. The Monarchs were outshot on the night 17-10 and the hosts had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Michael Statham made five of his six saves in the second half, including a key stop less than 60 seconds after the game-tying goal on a blast by Taylor Calheira.
UMBC (1-0-1) controlled possession for most of the first half and made their one tally at 36:27 as Hans Nesheim and Robbie Ryerson combined to find Jordan Travers on a crossing pass and he put one into the left side of the net.
ODU now will be off until Monday, September 4 when they head to Fairfax to tangle with George Mason at 7 p.m.
