RICHMOND, Va. – The Old Dominion women's soccer team scored once in each half on Thursday night and knocked off in-state rival VCU 2-0 at SportsBackers Stadium.

The win for ODU (3-0-0) gives the Monarchs their most consecutive wins to start a season since 2008 when they won their first five.

"I am immensely proud of the team tonight. It's not an easy place to play and VCU is a quality side who play good soccer with great intensity," said ODU Head Coach Angie Hind. "They really came out strong and put us under pressure early in the game, and I was pleased how well we dealt with that pressure."

An even first half saw each team with six shots. Old Dominion broke the scoreless run at 36:27 with a feed by Aleigha Arndt to catch Thalia Morisi who popped it into the net for the early 1-0 lead.

"We made a few changes which I think helped us get a better hold on the game and looked stronger as the half ended," Hind said. "These games are always so close, and you have to be better in both penalty boxes to get the result. I thought we took our chances so well and at the other end defended together and with heart."

In the second half the Rams held a 9-3 advantage on shots, but ODU had the one to find the back of the net at 66:43 as Madison Micheletti connected with Rhea Kijowski whose blast gave the guests a 2-0 advantage.

Emily Bredek recorded her third straight clean sheet to start the year making six saves on the night with four coming in the final 45 minutes, including a penalty kick just after the Monarchs made it 2-0. "It was a great team performance tonight, but I have to say Emily Bredek was a standout in goal," said Hind.

ODU returns home to finish off the "City of Richmond Week" as they host the Richmond Spiders on Sunday at 6 p.m. on Pack The Park Night.
