FAIRFAX, Va. – The Old Dominion women's soccer team kicked off the 2023 season in impressive fashion on Thursday night scoring two goals in an 84 second span of the first half to propel them to a 3-0 win at George Mason.

"It's always important to get off to a good start and I think we looked hungry out the gates tonight," said ODU Head Coach Angie Hind. "Playing an in-state rival is always a competitive match up and it showed in phases of the game tonight, however I was really pleased with some of the soccer we played and I thought we created a lot of chances which was really pleasing."

ODU (1-0-0) controlled the ball for much of the first half and got on the board at 16:33 as Ece Turkoglu took a feed-in by Madison Micheletti and Ashlynn Kuhla before giving the Monarchs an early 1-0 lead with a touch into the far right corner of the net.

Anna Tørsløv pushed ODU to a 2-0 lead 84 seconds later as she was running down the left side and sent one toward the net that just tailed right into the opposite side of the goal for a 2-0 ODU lead.

In the second half, George Mason (0-1-0) opened with a flurry of shots that Emily Bredek stonewalled to keep her shutout going. The Monarchs got the third tally at 75:17 as Turkoglu and Riley Mullen tag-teamed a ball in and Thalia Morisi put it in for the 3-0 advantage.

On the night, ODU held a 22-4 advantage in shots, 12-2 on goal, and a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. The three goals is the most in a season opener since a 4-1 win at Towson in the 2019 opener.

"Nice to see some new players get on the field and I thought we had a solid team performance. Of course it is so early and we have much still to work on, but this is definitely a good result to start," Hind added.

ODU will hit the home pitch on Sunday at 6 p.m. to tangle with Campbell.
