NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women's soccer team announced recently its 2023 team captains are Gry Boe Thrysoe, Ece Turkoglu and Megan Watts.
"I am delighted to have three inspiring young women to lead our program this year. Not only are they talented but absolutely committed to this program and the culture we have," said Hind. "Megan and Ece did a fantastic job leading us last year to more success. Now with the addition of Gry to this leadership, I believe our team are in the hands of players who know what it takes to win, and importantly lead by example in everything they do for ODU women soccer. I am excited to see them grow even further in their roles as Captains."
Thrysoe is a talented midfielder who returns to the team after an injury in 2022. She earned third team All-Conference USA honors and was named to the All-Freshman team in 2021 after appearing in all 19 games and starting 17. She scored two goals, with one being the game-winner against Richmond. Thrysoe was sixth on the team in shots attempted. This is her first year as a captain.
Turkoglu was also captain in 2022 when she started every game amassing almost 1,600 minutes. She scored two goals this season against Richmond and Coastal Carolina, while recording an assist in the win over Marshall. Turkoglu had the decisive PK in the semifinal win over South Alabama as she earned All-Sun Belt Conference and All-Sun Belt Conference Tournament honors.
Watts started all 21 matches last season logging over 1,400 minutes. She had a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win at Richmond and had the game-winner in ODU's inaugural Sun Belt Conference matchup at Louisiana. Watts also had a goal against Marshall and tallied the lone goal in the Sun Belt Tournament opener against Arkansas State. This is her second straight year as a captain.
Old Dominion opens on the road Thursday night taking on George Mason at 6 p.m. The Monarchs will have their home opener on August 20 hosting Campbell also at 6 p.m.
