DALLAS -- Former Monarch women's tennis standout Yuliia Starodubtseva won her third International Tennis Federation (ITF) event on Sunday with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Yafan Wang of China at the Dallas Open 60k held on the campus of SMU.
With the win, Starodubtseva earns a spot in the qualifying rounds of the upcoming U.S. Open Championships in September.
She opened the event with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jamie Loeb and advanced through the second round with a walkover win. In the quarterfinals, she knocked off the top-seed Madison Brengle 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and then defeated YeXin Ma of China 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals.
In the spring, Starodubtseva won a 25k event in Texas and earlier this summer won her first 60k event in Sumpter, South Carolina.
"An amazing day. Yuliia continues to impress and make all of Monarch Nation so proud," says ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla. "I can't explain the amount of pride we all feel as she continues her journey to be one of the best players in the world. Yuliia is a shining example of representing her alma mater, herself and Ukraine with class. I am just so happy and happy for her."
