NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion women's volleyball and head coach Fred Chao announced the team's 2023 schedule on Tuesday, June 27.
This fall will see the Monarchs travel to three tournaments and play nine programs for the first time. ODU will face teams from the A10, ACC, ASUN, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, CAA, Horizon League, MEAC, Patriot League, Summit League and the WAC.
"We will be challenged in many ways this fall," said Chao. "We will compete against teams that are bigger, teams that play faster, and teams that are more experienced. I'm looking forward to the variety of opponents, and our non-conference schedule will prepare us well for our Sun Belt schedule. We will need to quickly assimilate our new players and tweak our system to maximize our personnel during our preseason training. I believe we can play at a high level, but consistency will be a point of emphasis."
After a home exhibition on August 18, the Monarchs open their season by hosting VCU and Norfolk State for the team's annual Quest for the Crown tournament. ODU then closes out the month with a home match versus William & Mary on August 29.
September sees the team in Annapolis, Maryland for the Kristen Dickmann Invitational, hosted by the Naval Academy on September 1-2. Old Dominion opens the Invitational against Maryland that Friday, then plays Utah Valley and the host Midshipmen on Saturday.
After a trip to Charlottesville to play Virginia on September 5, the Monarchs will head to the nation's capital on September 8-9 for the DC Showdown. Co-hosted by Georgetown and George Washington, ODU will face the Hoyas the morning of the 8th, then head across town to take on the Revolutionaries that evening. Old Dominion rounds out the tournament with a noon tilt against North Alabama on the 9th.
The following week, ODU will be in Morgantown, West Virginia for the Mountaineer Invitational on September 14-15. That Thursday will start with a morning match against West Virginia, followed by a mid-afternoon contest against Robert Morris. The Monarchs then round out the tournament at noon on Friday as they square off with North Dakota State. Old Dominion then returns to Norfolk to host Liberty for its final non-conference match of the season on September 19.
Sun Belt Conference play will feature two matches each weekend as the Monarchs will play all six of their East Division rivals. ODU hosts Georgia Southern (September 29-30), James Madison (October 6-7) and Georgia State (November 2-3) and will travel to Marshall (September 21-22), Coastal Carolina (October 13-14) and App State (October 26-27). The conference schedule also includes two weekends against West Division teams: ODU will host Louisiana on October 19-20 and close out the regular season at Southern Miss on November 10-11.
The 2023 Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be held at the Foley Events Center in Foley, Alabama on November 15-19. Seeding for the tournament will be determined by winning percentage against divisional foes only, with the top two seeds from each division earning automatic byes to the quarterfinal round.
