ORLANDO, Fla. – The 2023 NCAA Singles Championships opened on Monday morning and Old Dominion's Tatsiana Sasnouskaya started with a bang at the United States Tennis Association National Campus.
Sasnouskaya knocked off Alana Smith of North Carolina State 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 64. Smith, seeded 9-16 in the event and 13th-ranked nationally, held a 4-2 lead in the second set but Sasnouskaya stormed back winning the last four games to advance.
With the win, Sasnouskaya advanced to the round of 32 on Tuesday where she will face Layne Sleeth of Oklahoma. Sleeth defeated Julie Adams of Virginia 6-4, 6-4 in her opening round match and is 50th-ranked nationally.
Tuesday will also be the start of the doubles competition where Sasnouskaya and Sofia Johnson will face the fourth-seeded duo of Carmen and Ivana Corley of Oklahoma. Times for that match, along with Sasnouskaya's singles match, will be determined late Monday.
"Great performance from T today. She executed a strong game plan from the first point and made wise adjustments in the second set to take the match in straight sets," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla. "Looking forward to a tough opponent from Oklahoma tomorrow."
