NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University volleyball team is headed overseas for the first time next week as the Monarchs travel to Spain and Portugal as part of their European Volleyball Tour on May 15-27.

It will be the program's first opportunity to travel abroad. The Monarchs are headed into their fourth season as a program in fall 2023 and NCAA rules permit teams to travel overseas once every four years.

"We are fortunate to have this opportunity," said head coach Fred Chao. "A foreign tour is a special activity that requires a significant amount of resources. Thanks to our special donors, we can make this dream a reality. This trip is another milestone for ODU Volleyball. As we move forward from the 'build' and into the 'live', we get to thank our founding members with this trip as well as give our returning players a competitive and cultural experience that will bring us closer as a team."

Over the course of the trip, the Monarchs will explore the cities of Barcelona, Soria, Madrid and Lisbon. Some stops along the way include tours of the Sagrada Familia, the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Glass Palace and the Castelo de São Jorge. The team will also spend some time sightseeing in La Barceloneta, Somorrostro Beach, the Plaza Reial and more.

The trip will also provide the Monarchs with the opportunity to take the court against several Spanish and Portuguese volleyball clubs, to include matches with Barca CVB, the Spanish Junior National Team, Club Voleibol Torrejon and Club Oeiras Next Level.

ODU will arrive in Barcelona on Tuesday, May 16 and will play Barca CVB on Wednesday, May 17. In Soria, the Monarchs will play the Spanish Junior National Team on Friday, May 19 and again on Saturday, May 20. The Monarchs then travel to the capital city of Madrid, where they will face Club Voleibol Torrejon on Monday, May 22 or Tuesday, May 23. The team then makes its way to Lisbon and will play Club Oeiras Next Level on Saturday, May 27 before flying back to the States.
