NORFOLK, Va. – The 32nd ranked Old Dominion women's tennis team finished an undefeated Sun Belt Conference regular season on Saturday with a 7-0 victory over App State at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
With the win, ODU (15-4, 10-0) clinches the regular season title and top-seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Peachtree City, Ga.
"I'm happy for our team earning the regular season title and the one seed. They deserved it. We played tough today against App State in very tough and windy conditions. We are excited for next week and the post-season," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.
In doubles, the Monarchs got going with their top-line duo of Sofia Johnson and Tatsiana Sasnouskaya. The tandem, ranked 37th nationally, defeated Savannah Dada-Mascoll and Ellie Murphy 6-2 for the first win. Following them was the line two pair of Allison Isaacs and Alexandra Viktorovitch with a 6-3 win over Erika Dodridge and Helena Jansen for the early 1-0 lead.
ODU got on board quickly in singles as Shahar Biran trailed early in her match and went on a run to win 6-2, 6-1 over Maggie Pate for a 2-0 lead. Allison Isaacs matched her score with a win at line six over Murphy to take a 3-0 lead.
Johnson had the clincher for the Monarchs at line two winning 6-4, 6-3 over Dada-Mascoll to lock up the dual win. Immediately after that, Viktorovitch pulled a 6-4, 6-4 win over Olwyn Ryan-Bovey for a 5-0 advantage.
The final two matches each went three sets with App State (12-7, 8-3) winning both first sets. Alesya Yakubovich defeated Dodridge 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) to take a 6-0 lead, while Sasnouskaya finished the sweep with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at the top.
ODU now will play in the quarterfinals on Thursday at the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Championships in Peachtree City, Ga. against an opponent to be determined.
