NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion Women's lacrosse (4-7, 0-1) team fell to East Carolina on Saturday, 7-5. Danielle Dundas scored two goals in the loss and Jenna Peccia made eight saves.
The Monarchs took an early 1-0 lead when Dundas bounced a shot past the keeper with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. ODU made it 2-0 when Annalynn Pompetti scored her first career goal with one minute remaining in the quarter.
The second quarter continued to be a defensive battle, but ECU cut the Monarchs lead in half with a goal with two minutes left in the quarter. The Pirates tied the game with two seconds left before halftime making it 2-2.
ODU took a 3-2 lead with Dundas' second goal of the day but that would be all the scoring in the third quarter for the Monarchs as the Pirates would add four goals and take a 6-3 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Monarchs scored quickly to start the fourth quarter when Olivia Tanneberger converted a free position attempt. The defenses would continue to hold each other off the board until ECU scored with four minutes left. Trailing 7-4, Old Dominion tried to mount a comeback as Sydney Taylor would take a shot that would stay low enough and find the back of the net with two minutes left but that would be all as ODU fell 7-5.
The Monarchs are back in action next Saturday, Mar. 25 as they will travel to Vanderbilt for a game starting at noon.
