Quick Start Leads Women's Tennis Over Marshall 5-2

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – In a battle of nationally ranked teams on Friday afternoon, the 20th-ranked Old Dominion women's tennis team won the first three singles matches to cruise to a 5-2 win over 75th-ranked Marshall in Sun Belt Conference action.
 
"A solid win today. We did a great job applying the things we worked on last week at practice," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla. "We are excited to play at home next weekend."
 
Doubles saw ODU (8-4, 3-0) take the team point following winning two of the three matches. Marshall (8-5, 2-1) took the first win at line two, but ODU answered with a win at the top spot by Sofia Johnson and Tatsiana Sasnouskaya by a 6-3 count. The point was clinched by Shahar Biran and Alesya Yakubovich who won at line three also by a 6-3 score.
 
In singles, the Monarchs got three quick wins to lock up the dual match victory. Johnson opened the run with a 6-, 6-3 win over Johanna Strom at line two for a 2-0 lead. Biran answered that with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Doroteja Joksovic to take the advantage to 3-0.
 
The clincher was at the top by Sasnouskaya for a 6-2, 6-3 win over Emma Vanderheyden to lead 4-0. Alexandra Viktorovitch closed out the wins for ODU with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Andjela Lopicic at line five for a 5-0 lead. Marshall took a pair of three-set wins in the final matches for the 5-2 margin.
 
Old Dominion returns home for a five-match homestand starting on March 25 against South Alabama at 10 a.m. EDT.
