NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion Women's lacrosse (3-6) team fell to the Furman Paladins on Saturday, 9-8. Sydney Taylor led the Monarchs offensively scoring three goals.
Furman jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter before Taylor got the Monarchs on the board. The Paladins added one more goal making it 4-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Furman scored first in the second quarter giving them a 5-1 lead, but ODU responded with three unanswered goals to end the half. Jayme Weber found a cutting Jeslyn Krebs for the goal, Weber would cut into that lead when she scored a goal of her own. Moira Olexa scored the final goal of the second quarter as the Monarchs went into halftime trailing 5-4.
Furman started the third quarter with two quick goals making it 7-4 before Taylor assisted Olivia Tanneberger on a goal. The Paladins added one more goal in the quarter and went into the fourth quarter leading 8-5.
ODU cut into the lead when Taylor ripped a shot into the back of the net, but Furman responded with a goal of their own. ODU didn't shy away as Taylor scored her third goal of the game making it 9-7. Furman's Caroline Swain received a yellow card with 42 seconds left which gave Danielle Dundas a free position shot that she slotted into the back of the net. In the final 40 seconds the Monarchs had an opportunity to tie the game being a man up but wouldn't be able to find the back of the net and Furman held on to win.
The Monarchs are back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 15 at 1 p.m. when they host Mount Saint Mary's.
