MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Old Dominion women's golf team wrapped up play at the Columbia Classic on Monday, finishing in sixth place with a 36-hole total of 22-over par 598. The Lions hosted the Classic at the par-72 course at Duran Golf Club.
Originally scheduled as a three-day tournament, the field could not complete Sunday's second round due to high winds in the area. As such, all scores for the day were scrapped and the Classic was shortened to a 36-hole tournament.
ODU began its trip with a 13-over par 301 in Saturday's opening round, then bettered that effort with a nine-over 297 on Monday. Texas Tech was the team champion at five-under 571, Princeton came in second place with an even 576, and Tulsa was third with a four-over 580.
"We are trending in the right direction," said head coach Mallory Kane. "It was a shame the tournament was only 36 holes, but that happens sometimes in golf. We have a few things we can improve upon before we leave for Las Vegas. Everyone has earned a much needed day off and we will be ready to go come Saturday."
On the individual side, there was a three-way tie for first place as Catherine Rao (Princeton), Linyu Dong (Texas Tech) and Yanjun Liu (Princeton) all finished at two-under par with scores of 142.
For the Monarchs, Federica Torre and Lucia Gonzalez both posted five-over 149s to tie for 23rd. Leah Onosato and Minami Kudo were both one stroke behind them at 150 to tie for 29th, and Klara Wildhaber's total of 10-over 154 tied her for 45th.
Gonzalez turned in the team's best round of the Classic with an even 72 for her final trip around the course. Wildhaber's average of 2.88 tied for second in par-3 scoring. Gonzalez made a team-high eight birdies, Torre followed with seven, and Kudo led ODU with 25 putts for par.
Next up for the Monarchs is The Show at Spanish Trail on Feb. 20-21. UNLV is hosting the two-day tournament at Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.
