NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team will open their 2023 home schedule on Saturday afternoon at noon when they'll face the Columbia Lions inside the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
Old Dominion (1-0) enters the match after a 5-2 win over Penn State on Sunday in State College, Pa. In doubles, the Monarchs took the team point winning two of the three matches. At one doubles, the duo of Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Sofia Johnson defeated Sofiya Chekhylstova and Olivia Dorner 6-0. The point was clinched at the second spot as Alexandra Viktorovitch and Allison Isaacs took a 6-4 win over Carla Gibrau and Ioana Gheorgita. Singles saw wins by Isaacs, Johnson, Shanar Biran and Alesya Yakubovich.
Columbia will begin its spring slate this weekend as they'll also take on Morgan State Saturday in Norfolk at 5 p.m. The Lions won three of their last four dual matches in 2022 and finished the year with a 13-11 record.
The Monarchs and Lions faced off last year in New York as then 30th-ranked Old Dominion took a 4-0 win over Columbia on March 27.
"We have always had battles with Columbia so we are doing everything we can to be prepared and are looking forward to playing at home," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.
ODU will hit the road next weekend for the ITA Kickoff Weekend in a regional hosted by Ohio State. The Monarchs will open with the host Buckeyes on January 27 at 10 a.m. with Wake Forest and Tennessee also competing.
