STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Old Dominion women's tennis team opened their 2023 spring schedule on Sunday morning with a 5-2 win at Penn State.
"Great way to start the season, we had some first match nerves but worked through them," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla. "We have some things to clean up, but overall everyone contributed to the win today against a good Penn State team and that's very satisfying."
In doubles, the Monarchs took the team point winning two of the three matches. At one doubles, the duo of Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Sofia Johnson defeated Sofiya Chekhylstova and Olivia Dorner 6-0. The point was clinched at the second spot as Alexandra Viktorovitch and Allison Isaacs took a 6-4 win over Carla Gibrau and Ioana Gheorgita.
Singles saw ODU (1-0) take wins at the two, three, four and six spots in the lineup. Johnson started at the two spot and took a 6-3, 6-2 win over Yvonne Zuffova for a 2-0 lead. Shahar Biran recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win over Gibrau at the three spot to lead 3-0. Alesya Yakubovich clinched the dual victory at the four spot with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 win over Gheorgita to hold a 4-0 advantage. Allison Isaacs got the fifth point with a 6-4, 7-5 win at the six spot over Alexandria Nelson.
Old Dominion plays its home opener on Saturday at noon hosting Columbia inside the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
