NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion women's tennis freshman Sofia Johnson was named on Wednesday as the Conference USA Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office.
Johnson went 4-0 on the week with two wins in doubles and two in singles as the Monarchs swept Charlotte and James Madison 4-0. In doubles, her wins with Alexandra Viktorovich enabled the Monarchs to clinch the doubles point. Against Charlotte they won 6-4, while later against JMU they won 7-5.
In singles, Johnson got the first victory in both matches for ODU. She recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win over Charlotte and then a 6-1, 6-1 win over JMU. On the year, Johnson is 16-7 in singles and 13-2 in doubles.
This is the sixth time this spring that ODU has won the Athlete of the Week award. Yuliia Starodubtseva has won it three times, while Alexandra Viktorovich won it in consecutive weeks.
ODU returns to action on Friday morning at 11 a.m. in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championships. They'll take on the winner of UAB-Western Kentucky at Middle Tennessee.
