NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion baseball team travels to Miami to play FIU in its third Conference USA series of the season. The series gets going on Friday at 7 p.m. before a 6 p.m. first pitch on Saturday. The Monarchs and Panthers wrap up the series at noon on Sunday. All three games are being carried live on Money Talk 1310 AM 100.9 FM and 97.3 HD2, and the first two games of the series are streaming live on CUSA.tv.

Around the Horn
ODU lost a weekend series for the first time in nine tries, dropping two of three to Charlotte at the Bud last weekend. Andy Garriola hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th on Sunday as the Monarchs avoided their first sweep at home since March 2019 with a 13-12 win.

Campbell hit two-run home runs in the eighth and ninth innings to escape the Bud with an 8-6 win on Tuesday. Garriola had three hits and drove in three, and Blake Morgan struck out a career-best eight in three innings of work.

ODU leads C-USA in batting average (.316), doubles (64), home runs (46), scoring (9.8), slugging (.580) and stolen bases (41).

Garriola is the conference leader in homers (10), slugging (.830) and total bases (78). Noah Dean and Jason Hartline share the C-USA lead with four saves, and Carter Trice tops the conference with 12 stolen bases.

The Monarchs have 41 stolen bases through the first 23 games of the season. ODU swiped only 39 bases in 60 games last year.

Garriola needs just one more home run to join Todd Azar (1984-87), Matt Quatraro (1993-96) and Jason Greiner (1997-00) in a three-way tie for the fourth-most long balls in program history. Garriola has 34 career home runs and is tied for second among all active Division I players with 169 career RBIs.

Scouting FIU
FIU enters the weekend 9-15 overall and is 2-4 in conference play. The Panthers opened their conference slate by taking two games against Marshall before being swept at LA Tech last weekend.

FIU is hitting .237 as a team, 12th in C-USA, and is also 12th with a 6.36 ERA. The Panthers are dangerous on the basepaths with 30 steals and are striking out 10.1 batters per nine innings.

Adrian Figueroa paces the team with a .313 batting average. Alec Sanchez is the team leader in hits (28), doubles (seven), homers (six) and RBIs (23).

Patrick Pridgen is 1-3 with a 3.45 ERA but tops the conference with 52 strikeouts (16th nationally) and 14.94 strikeouts per nine innings (12th in Division I). Ryan Cabarcas has made six starts this season and leads the team with two wins.
