HOUSTON – After opening the 2022-23 season at Florida Gulf Coast on Monday, the Old Dominion women's basketball team is back on the hardwood this Thursday as the Monarchs play at Texas Southern in a 6:30 p.m. game at H&PE Arena.
 
Tomorrow's game will be streamed on TSU's YouTube channel and live stats will also be available. Matthew Hatfield will call the game on the ODU Sports Radio Network.
 
The Series
Thursday's game will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
 
About ODU
The Monarchs (0-1) dropped their first game of the season 81-62 at FGCU on Tuesday night at Alico Arena. Makayla Dickens led ODU in the loss with 18 points, Jordan McLaughlin added 14 points and Kaye Clark also reached double figures with 10 points. Jada Duckett and Brianna Jackson both finished with six rebounds each, and Althea Kara Angeles contributed six points after making both of her shots from beyond the arc.
 
ODU's first meeting with FGCU saw the Monarchs edge the Eagles in steals 11-10, but finish with just three assists. The team combined to shoot 21-for-57 (.368) from the field and 5-for-12 (.417) from distance. ODU's 15-for-19 (.789) effort from the free-throw line currently leads the Sun Belt. ODU's newcomers were also responsible for 40 of the team's points.
 
After trailing 37-18 with 3:35 to play in the second quarter, the Monarchs closed out the half with 11 unanswered points. ODU then got to within five points early in the third quarter as Clark made one-of-two shots at the charity stripe and Dickens followed with a layup. However, FGCU pulled away with a 10-2 response and never looked back from there.

UT Arlington handed the Tigers (0-1) a 102-53 loss in what marked the first game for new head coach Vernette Skeete on Tuesday night at College Park Center. Andriana Avent led the team in the loss as she finished with 14 points, three rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. Freshmen Donterria Brown and Taniya Lawson also reached double digits with 12 and 11 points, respectively. After going into the locker room down 58-33, UTA outscored TSU 26-9 in the third quarter to out the game out of reach.
 
TSU was picked to finish eighth in the SWAC Preseason Poll with 155 points and Avent represented the Tigers on the Preseason All-SWAC First Team. The Sacramento, California native averaged 18.1 points through 23 games played last season and she reached double figures in 20 consecutive games. That production led to a First Team All-Conference nod.
 
Other returners for the for the Tigers include guards Jaelyn Compton and Alisa Knight and forwards Zyan Reynolds, Ariana Taylor and Skye Green. TSU has three transfers this year in guards Tania Hill (UMBC) and Mykaylyn Davis (Western Carolina) and forward Mary Myopo (North Idaho College). In addition to Brown and Lawson, the team's other freshmen include guards Kamryn Bates, Micah Gray and Anela Thomas, forward Jaida Belton and center Olivia Brooks.

ODU has its home opener next Tuesday, Nov. 15 when the team hosts William & Mary for a 6:30 p.m. game at Chartway Arena.

Men's and women's basketball season tickets for the 2022-23 season are available now at ynottix.com.
 
Men's basketball season tickets cost $215 and include tickets for the Monarchs' exhibition on Nov. 2 and all 16 of ODU's regular season home games. Women's basketball season tickets cost $115 for adults and $250 for courtside seating and include tickets to all 15 of the Monarchs' home games. Season tickets represent a savings of more than $50 for men's games and $45 for women's games, over single-game tickets. Single-game tickets for regular season men's and women's basketball games will go on sale later in the month. Single-game ticket prices start at $18 for men's games and $11 for women's games, with special pricing for senior citizens, ODU faculty and staff, youth (12 and younger) and members of the military. ODU students can register for student tickets for free to any ODU men's and women's home game.
