NORFOLK, Va. – The 14th ranked Old Dominion Field Hockey team shutout Columbia University on Friday by a score of 3-0 at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex in the first ever meeting between the two. The Monarchs have now extended their win-streak to four matches. Marlon de Bruijne led ODU finding the back of the net twice in the victory.
Old Dominion (4-1) started the scoring early as Jolene Ulichney assisted Marlon de Bruijne just five minutes into the match. The Monarch's out shot the Lions 7-1 in the first half but at the end of the second period the score remained 1-0.
"It was a good effort today for us. Marlon got us going with a beautiful backhand shot to the top corner. The goals we wanted to hit on we did and did well," said ODU Head Coach Andrew Griffiths. "In the first half we had tons of possession but couldn't create outcomes. We made that the focus of second half, to create good quality shots and win some corners which we did. Shutout wins aren't easy to come by and Cam played great as usual in goal and our defense was superb."
ODU came out of halftime and blitzed the Lions with seven shots in the third period, two of those shots found the back of the net. Four minutes into the second half, Evelyn Murray broke away from the Columbia defense who then passed it off to Ulichney for the score. The scoring was closed by de Brujine as she finished off the scoring for the Monarchs, scorching the back of the net extending the lead to 3-0.
Old Dominion out shot Columbia 19-4 in the match.
The Monarchs are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 11 as they travel to Richmond for a 12 p.m. contest with the Spiders.
