NORFOLK, Va. -- Junior forward Yuliia Khrystiuk blasted in a goal off a breakaway at the 16- minute mark and the Monarchs made it stand up as Old Dominion defeated Longwood 1-0 in women's soccer action Sunday night.

With the win Old Dominion (1-4) snapped a four-game skid to start the season, while Longwood (3-3) dropped its second straight match.

"We are delighted to get the win. It's been a rough start and we all know that. The biggest thing tonight was to get the win," said ODU Head Coach Angie Hind.

Khrystiuk got free at midfield and took it to the top of the 18-yard box, before putting it in the left corner of the net past goalie Mary Kate Levush. Old Dominion kept the Lancers without a shot in the first half and ended with a 10-4 advantage.

"Great goal by Yuliia to get us on track. She took it in stride and put it in from quite a ways out. I am really pleased for her and we had a couple more knock on the door in Carla Morich and Anna Tørsløv," said Hind.

In the second half, Longwood forced the issue in stretches recording three corner kicks including a couple in the last two minutes. Each time, the Monarchs forced an errant attempt by the guests.

"Longwood is a team that always competes and makes things tough on you. In the last 20 minutes they did just that and forced the issue," Hind said. "We were resilient and hung in. It wasn't pretty at times, but that's how its got to be sometimes. We just had to figure out how get going we do that as well so we get some experience from that for down the road."

Old Dominion now heads to Richmond on September 8 for a 5 p.m. kick.
